Biography
Nigel Scullion was elected to the Senate for the Northern Territory in November 2001.
Prior to his election, Nigel was a professional fisherman and owner/operator of various marine service businesses including commercial fishing, research charters, surveillance and recreational fishing, marine engineering and marine security. He served the industry extensively as Chairman of the Northern Territory Seafood Council, Chairman of the Northern Territory Seafood and Maritime Training Advisory Board, Chairman of the Australian Seafood Industry Council, and Deputy Chairman and Chairman of the International Coalition of Fisheries Association.
Nigel has also worked as a surgical dresser, and worked many years in the mining industry in a range of roles including Field Assistant, Geophysical Observer and Manager for drilling and exploration programs.
Nigel was educated at Deakin High School in Canberra. He holds a Marine Skippers Ticket – Master 5 Trading and Fishing and is a graduate of the Australian Rural Leadership Program
Nigel has three children and lives in Darwin. His interests include hunting, fishing, diving, hiking, photography and clay target shooting.
Senator Scullion’s achievements for the Northern Territory include:
- Successful negotiation of excision of Territory islands from the Migration Zone
- Secured funding for a wharf and $500,000 for road funding for the transportation of forestry logs for the Tiwi Island Forestry Plantation
- Successful negotiation against a rise in Kakadu National Park fees and eventual abolition of fees altogether
- Provided $10,000 to fund a school bus for Xavier College on the Tiwi Island
- Secured the preservation of WW11 Strauss Airstrip with funding of $1.3m
- Provision of Sniffer Dogs to Territory communities to combat drug trafficking
- Secured funding for unincorporated roads for the NT Cattleman's Association for the transportation of cattle throughout the Territory
- Secured $10m for High School on Tiwi Islands so that teenagers can stay on their home island and continue their education
