Senators
Senator Fiona Nash
Deputy Leader of The Nationals in the Senate
Senator for New South Wales
Biography
It was with a passion for championing the interests of rural and regional Australia that Senator Nash first entered the Senate in July 2005.
Since then, Fiona has turned that passion into results for local communities, ensuring the seven million-plus people living outside the metropolitan areas have a strong voice when it comes to local and national issues.
Fiona has met countless people from across the state during her time in office, hearing first-hand the issues facing families and businesses in the bush and building on her strong understanding of the needs of those that make up these communities.
Since entering the Senate, Fiona has quickly gained a reputation as a passionate advocate for an enhanced domestic biofuels industry, strongly promoting the need for the major oil companies to make the cleaner, greener and cheaper alternative more readily available to motorists.
Fiona is also well known for her strong stance on rural telecommunication issues, fostered by her belief that people in the bush should have equal access to the technologies enjoyed by their city counterparts particularly in relation to high-speed internet and mobile phone coverage. Ensuring infrastructure is maintained and developed for future generations throughout our rural and regional communities is also a top priority for Fiona.
Fiona was appointed as The Nationals Whip in the Senate at the beginning of 2007 and is currently a member of the Senate Rural and Regional Affairs & Transport Committee and the Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security.
Fiona and her husband David run a rural property in the Young district where they live with their two teenage sons. Before entering parliament, Fiona worked for various federal ministers, which helped her develop a strong base on which to begin her own political career. She was educated at Mitchell College at Bathurst where she undertook a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, history and politics.
Fiona has been a member of The Nationals for more than 10 years during which time she served as chairman of her local branch before spending several years on the NSW state party executive. She has held senior campaign positions within the party and was part of the 1998 political exchange to the United States for the congressional elections.
