Biography

Mark Vaile was first elected to Federal Parliament at the 1993 election.

From beginning his working career as a jackeroo in regional New South Wales he has gone on to serve the community as a local Alderman, Deputy Mayor, Federal Member of Parliament, Minister and ultimately, Deputy Prime Minister.
Mark was the Federal Parliamentary Leader of The Nationals from June 2005 until December 2007 and has wide experience at the highest levels of government in Australia.  Most recently, he served as the Minister for Transport and Regional Services from September 2006 until the 2007 Federal election.

Mark was Minister for Trade from July 1999 to September 2006 and responsible for negotiating Australia's free trade agreements with the United States, Singapore and Thailand.  He also led Australia's drive to free up global trade through the World Trade Organisation.

Other Ministerial portfolios he has also held include Transport and Regional Development (1997-1998) and Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (1998-1999).

Prior to his election to Parliament, Mark and wife Wendy owned and operated a real estate and stock and station business at Wingham on the mid-north coast of NSW.  In this time, he served eight years as an Alderman on the Greater Taree City Council, including two terms as Deputy Mayor.

Mark and Wendy have three daughters and are proud grandparents. They live in Taree, New South Wales.

Mark Vaile’s achievements for his electorate include:

  • Major upgrading works to the Pacific Highway from the Hastings Valley to Sydney
  • University Campus & Rural Clinical School Campuses
  • Federal funding towards the North Coast Cancer Unit
  • Investing In Our Schools funding for local Government & non Government Schools
  • More than $25million in extra funding for local roads
  • Increasing Aged Care funding in the electorate by three times during the Coalition's term in office.
