Biography
Warren was elected Federal Parliamentary Leader of The Nationals in December 2007. He is also Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and Local Government.
A third generation farmer from the Kumbia District near Kingaroy, Queensland, Warren was first elected to Federal Parliament in March 1990 as the Member for Wide Bay.
Warren has wide experience at the most senior levels of government, having served as a Minister in the Howard Coalition Government for 10 years. His first appointment was as Minister for Customs and Consumer Affairs in October 1997. A year later, he was appointed Minister for Community Services before assuming the position of Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry in July 1999, a position he held for six years. He was appointed Minister for Transport and Regional Services in July 2005 before exchanging portfolios with then-Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Mark Vaile in September 2006.
Before entering Parliament, Warren served his local community as a Kingaroy Shire Councillor from 1976 to 1990, including seven years as Mayor. He was President of the Burnett District Local Government Association and Chairman of the Fraser Coast-South Burnett Regional Tourism Board. He also held the position of Deputy Chairman of the Queensland Grain Handling Authority and was a member of the Queensland Grain Growers’ Association State Council.
Warren is a former State and National President of the Rural Youth Organisation.
He is married to Lyn and lives in Maryborough.
Warren Truss’ achievements for his electorate include:
- $2 billion commitment to four lane the Bruce Highway between Cooroy and Curra by 2020.
- More than $7.5 million in Commonwealth funding and extra student places for the development of the University of Southern Queensland’s Fraser Coast campus.
- $8 million for the Sustainable Regions programme to boost industry in the Wide Bay Burnett region.
