Biography
Bruce Scott has been the Federal Member for Maranoa since 1990 and in 2008 was elected Second Deputy Speaker for the 42nd Federal Parliament. He is also a member of the Climate Change, Environment, Water and the Arts Committee.
Bruce was the Minister for Veterans Affairs from 1996 until 2001 and the Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence between 1998 and 2001. His achievements in the Veteran Affairs portfolio include the expansion of Gold Card entitlements for veterans and war widows, the introduction of the highly successful Their Service - Our Heritage commemorative program, the creation of programs to assist and alleviate the impact of war service on the veteran and their family’s health, and the establishment of many international commemorative sites, including a new site at Gallipoli for the annual ANZAC Day Dawn Service.
From 2001 until 2007, Bruce chaired the Defence Sub Committee of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence & Trade. In 2002, he led a delegation representing the Commonwealth Government to the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Before entering politics he served on number of local and national organisations associated with agriculture, sheep and cattle production, and was President of both the Queensland and Australian Associations of Stud Merino Breeders. He is an Australian Nuffield Farming Scholar, moving to the UK in 1983 to study the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Commission and the processing, marketing and promotion of Australian wool in the UK and Europe.
Born and raised in Roma, Bruce has a comprehensive understanding of the needs of regional, rural and remote Australia. Bruce is dedicated to fighting hard for his constituents on the issues of telecommunications, drought assistance, roads, and rural and remote education and health.
Bruce Scott’s achievements for his electorate include:
- The abolition of timed local calls for people in remote parts of Maranoa and the extension of high speed broadband internet access via satellite to these areas;
- Standing up for landholders’ property rights by exposing the Queensland Labor Government’s secret agenda to compulsorily acquire land and water in the Lower Balonne catchment;
- Successfully campaigning for funding towards several tourism projects in Maranoa, including the historic Glengallan Homestead, the Cosmos and Bilby Centre in Charleville, the Blackall Wool Scour and the Big Rig Oil and Gas Museum in Roma.
