Luke Hartsuyker MP -
North Coast surf lifesaving clubs will be the major beneficiaries from a Coalition commitment to reduce drownings, Federal MP Luke Hartsuyker said today.
Federal Coalition leader Tony Abbott has announced that an elected Coalition Government would provide $10 million to surf life saving clubs with annual grants averaging $5,000 to assist them purchase vital rescue equipment, first aid and medical supplies.
“Australians are a beach loving people but the reality is too many people lose their lives along our coastline.
“Surf lifesaving clubs provide an invaluable service to local communities right long the North Coast. Each year surf lifesavers put their lives on the line and make hundreds of beaches a safer place to swim and surf.
“Safe beaches are not only good for local residents but they are also good for business. Tens of thousands of people travel to the North Coast each year to enjoy our beaches.
“Having patrolled beaches provides these people with a place to swim, knowing that help is not far away should it be required.
“The Coalition acknowledges the importance of the surf lifesaving movement and will provide average grants of $5000 for each and every club for five years.
“We will also provide up to $2 million for the Beach Drowning Black Spot Reduction Programme which will specifically target those beaches where swimmers and surfers are at greater risk.
“This will provide practical assistance to many clubs who struggle to cover the costs of providing a comprehensive surf monitoring and rescue service.”
Mr Hartsuyker said all 12 surf life saving clubs in the Cowper electorate deserved support.
“The Coalition is committed to reducing the number of drownings but we also want to ensure Surf Lifesaving Clubs are in position to assist those who are injured in the surf.”
Across Australia, 315 people drowned in 2010/11 and more than 158,000 volunteers patrol our beaches.
