Senator Barnaby Joyce -
Shadow Minister for Local Government, Senator Barnaby Joyce, says that Anna Bligh’s failure to consult local governments about the deferral of local government elections is “an insult to local Queensland communities”.
“I know from my experience of local governments that they are sick are tired of being pushed around by other levels of government. Anna Bligh’s failure to let local governments know about her decision to defer the March 31st elections is an insult to local Queensland communities.”
President of the Local Government Association of Queensland, Paul Bell, revealed today that local governments had not been consulted about pushing back council elections.
“It will be up to four months of uncertainty for all those involved in Queensland’s 73 councils.
“It’s another broken promise from Anna. She said that she wouldn’t move these elections to suit her political timetable. She also said she wouldn’t increase petrol prices or privatise Queensland assets.
“If Anna can’t be trusted on the timing of the election, how can she be trusted during the election?”
