The Nationals Federal Council is the party’s supreme governing body and peak policy forum.  Meeting annually, it draws together The Nationals’ federal parliamentary team, state parliamentary leaders and party leadership from around the nation.

Decisions made at our Federal Council generate national change.  For example, in 2009 the party bucked the popular group-think at the time and opposed the Rudd Government’s emissions trading scheme.  Ultimately, that decision and our subsequent campaign changed the course of politics in this country and cost Labor its majority at the 2010 election.

In a first for any Australian political party, The Nationals this year broadcast its Federal Council live online.  The online broadcast opened the meeting to the public, allowing Australians to watch the policy debate as it was occurring and to hear keynote speakers and party leaders Warren Truss MP, Senator Nigel Scullion and Senator Barnaby Joyce.

This year also saw The Nationals make another round of important policy decisions on big-ticket issues like health, education, foreign investment, coal seam gas, regional development, food security and much more.  These decisions will add to the policy platform that The Nationals take to the next federal election and into government.
