The Nation Builders
The Nationals have been represented in the Federal and
State Parliaments ever since its formation over 80 years ago.
It is an independent, conservative political party with
a proud record of achievement for its constituents across Australia.
The Nationals believe in private enterprise as the foundation
of the nation's economy. It provides a vital balance, ensuring the interests
of people living beyond the major metropolitan centers (Sydney,
Melbourne and Canberra) have voice in Parliament. Without The Nationals,
government policy would be determined by a substantial majority of city-based
parliamentarians.
The Party is a staunch advocate for the nation's wealth
generating rural and resource industries. It was born out of farm organisations
and still places great significance on agricultural and trade policies.
Investment in Australia's social capital contributes
to our national well-being. Encouraging and fostering people and communities
is an essential component to Australia's future as a vibrant and prosperous
nation.
Changing political, economic and demographic circumstances
have resulted in the Party broadening its base to the point where it
has policies covering the entire range of portfolio interests. It gives
special attention to balanced environmental protection and sustainable
development, small and family business, regional development, tourism
and family and social issues.
It upholds family and community values and fights for
a better quality of service, opportunity and life for all people, from
remote inland communities to major regional and coastal centres.
The Party has a major influence on policy and is responsible
for many landmark initiatives for Australia, ranging from hospital
and medical benefits schemes, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial
Research Organisation (CSIRO), the Australian Institute of Sport
and
the abolition of Federal death and gift duties, to the Regional
Australia Summit, the Natural Heritage Trust, the Roads to Recovery Program,
the Agriculture
- Advancing Australia package, the National Food Industry Strategy,
strengthened quarantine and border controls, improved market access
for Australian exporters, the National Water Agreement and major increases
in funding for country and regional health, education and communications.
