Balanced Development
The Nationals believe it is a national priority to meet
and overcome the economic and social challenges facing coastal, rural,
regional and remote Australia.
Our aim is to achieve a strong and resilient individuals,
businesses and communities with the resources, skills, wealth and opportunities
to play a pivotal role in building Australia's future.
The Nationals have a pivotal leadership role to play
in this vision through a long-term investment strategy in partnership
with the areas beyond the major metropolitan centres. This strategy
is built around three key areas for change: community empowerment, economic
and business development and equity of services.
The Nationals support:
- Policies for business and individuals to invest
in non-metropolitan areas of Australia;
- Active partnerships with communities to address
the constraints to development caused by salinity, land degradation
and poor water quality;
- Promotion of the benefits of living and investing
in the centres beyond the major metropolitan centres;
- Policies that address the impacts of an ageing
population looking for quality of life in retirement outside
of metropolitan centres.
- Access to educational opportunities for rural
Australians to study and find valuable and meaningful employment
in their own communities.
- Decentralisation of government agencies to provide
direct access and stronger local engagement on policy development
and service delivery.
- Policies which promote maximum opportunity for
small business, especially in country and regional areas, to
participate in the new economy and take full advantage of the
latest in info-technology, e-commerce and on-line communications
and break the tyranny of distance in a global economic environment;
- Investment that supports comprehensive infrastructure
to secure growth;
- The development of a more effective means of
planning the nation's transport infrastructure to address future
transport needs.
